What Is Stellar M22 IPL Active Acne Treatment?

The Lumenis Stellar M22 IPL Active Acne Treatment uses Optimal Pulse Technology (OPT®) to deliver precise, controlled pulses of broad-spectrum light that target the root causes of inflammatory acne — without antibiotics, harsh topicals, or downtime.

IPL light energy is absorbed by Propionibacterium acnes (the bacteria responsible for inflammatory breakouts), destroying them directly. Simultaneously, the light energy reduces sebaceous gland overactivity — decreasing oil production that feeds future breakouts — and calms the inflammatory cascade that causes redness, swelling, and post-inflammatory pigmentation.

For patients who have struggled with persistent inflammatory or cystic acne and want a drug-free, clinically proven alternative, the Stellar M22 IPL Active Acne protocol delivers visible clearance after the first session and lasting improvement over a series of four treatments.

How It Works — Three Mechanisms, One Clear Result

Mechanism 1

Bacterial Destruction

IPL light at specific wavelengths is absorbed by porphyrins produced by P. acnes bacteria. This generates reactive oxygen species that destroy the bacteria from within — clearing active breakouts without systemic antibiotics.

Mechanism 2

Sebaceous Gland Reduction

Thermal energy from the IPL pulses selectively targets overactive sebaceous glands, reducing their size and oil output. Less sebum means fewer clogged pores and a significantly reduced environment for future breakouts.

Mechanism 3

Inflammation Reduction

IPL energy targets oxyhemoglobin in the dilated blood vessels surrounding inflamed lesions, reducing redness and calming the inflammatory response. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) also fades as pigment is broken down.

The Lumenis OPT® Advantage

Unlike conventional IPL systems that deliver uneven energy spikes, the Stellar M22's Optimal Pulse Technology delivers each pulse with perfectly uniform energy distribution. This makes it safer across a wider range of skin tones and more effective at targeting acne without the risk of burns or uneven results.

Destroy P. acnes at the source

Bacterial Clearance

IPL-generated reactive oxygen species destroy acne-causing bacteria directly — clearing active inflammatory lesions without antibiotics or topical medications.

Reduce sebaceous overactivity

Oil Control

Selective thermal energy reduces sebaceous gland size and output, decreasing the oil production that feeds future breakouts and keeps pores clogged.

Clear post-acne marks

Pigment & Redness

IPL targets the redness and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation left behind by healed breakouts — restoring an even, clear complexion alongside active clearance.

What to Expect — Pre & Post Treatment

Before Your Treatment

  • Arrive with clean skin — no makeup, moisturizer, or sunscreen on the treatment area.
  • Avoid sun exposure and tanning (including self-tanner) for 2–4 weeks before treatment.
  • Discontinue retinol, retinoids, and exfoliating acids (AHAs/BHAs) for 5–7 days prior.
  • Do not use benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid on the day of treatment.
  • Inform your provider of any photosensitizing medications or recent isotretinoin (Accutane) use — a waiting period may be required.
  • Stay well-hydrated in the days leading up to your treatment.

After Your Treatment

  • Expect mild redness and warmth for a few hours after treatment — this is normal and resolves quickly.
  • Apply SPF 30+ daily without exception — sun protection is critical to protecting your results and preventing PIH.
  • Keep skin moisturized and avoid harsh active ingredients (retinol, AHAs, benzoyl peroxide) for 3–5 days after treatment.
  • Avoid direct sun exposure, saunas, and strenuous exercise for 24–48 hours post-treatment.
  • Do not pick or squeeze active lesions — allow the treatment to work naturally.
  • Makeup can typically be applied the day after treatment; consult your provider for specific guidance.

Treatment Protocol

Sessions

Series of 4 sessions recommended

Spacing

Spaced 2–3 weeks apart

Most patients see a meaningful reduction in active breakouts after their first session. The full protocol of 4 treatments spaced 2–3 weeks apart delivers peak clearance — reducing bacterial load, calming oil production, and clearing post-inflammatory pigmentation. Maintenance sessions every 3–6 months help sustain results long-term.

Results Timeline

After Session 1

Visible reduction in redness and inflammation around active lesions. Some patients notice fewer new breakouts within the first week.

Sessions 2–3

Significant reduction in active breakouts. Sebaceous gland activity decreases noticeably — skin feels less oily. Post-inflammatory pigmentation begins to fade.

Session 4 & Beyond

Peak clearance achieved. Skin tone is more even, oil production is controlled, and the frequency and severity of new breakouts is dramatically reduced.

Months 3–6

Results continue to improve as sebaceous gland remodeling matures. Maintenance sessions sustain clearance and prevent recurrence.

Long-Term Maintenance

After completing your initial series of 4, a maintenance session every 3–6 months helps sustain bacterial clearance and oil control — especially during high-humidity Gulf Coast summers when breakouts tend to flare. Pairing your IPL protocol with a medical-grade skincare regimen from MerLeaux significantly extends and amplifies your results.
