IPL Hair Removal with Zimmer Cryo

Shaving, waxing, and plucking take up too much time and often result in painful ingrown hairs or razor burn. At MerLeaux, we combine the gold standard of light therapy with advanced cooling technology to make unwanted hair a thing of the past — without the pain.

We use the Lumenis Stellar M22 IPL paired with the Zimmer Cryo cooling system. The IPL emits a broad spectrum of light that is absorbed by the melanin (pigment) in your hair follicle. This light converts to heat, effectively destroying the follicle's ability to grow hair. Simultaneously, the Zimmer Cryo gently blows continuous, freezing air (−30°C) across your skin — distracting nerve endings and making the treatment incredibly comfortable.

The Technology Explained

The Lumenis Stellar M22 IPL delivers precise, controlled pulses of broad-spectrum light targeting the melanin in each hair follicle. The light energy converts to heat at the follicle root, impairing its ability to produce new hair — while leaving the surrounding skin unaffected.

The Zimmer Cryo simultaneously delivers a continuous stream of −30°C chilled air to the skin surface. This cooling effect protects the epidermis, dramatically reduces discomfort, and allows for more effective treatment settings — making the combination significantly more comfortable than IPL alone.

What to Expect — Pre & Post Treatment

Before Your Treatment

  • Shave the treatment area 24 hours before your appointment — do not wax, tweeze, or use epilators for 4–6 weeks prior, as the follicle must be intact for IPL to target it.
  • Avoid sun exposure, tanning beds, and self-tanners for at least 2–4 weeks before treatment.
  • Arrive with clean, dry skin — no lotion, deodorant, or makeup on the treatment area.
  • Inform your provider of all medications, especially photosensitizing drugs or recent isotretinoin use.
  • Avoid spray tans and self-tanner for at least 2 weeks prior — active tan significantly increases risk.

After Your Treatment

  • You may experience mild redness or "goosebumps" (follicular edema) for up to 24 hours — this is normal.
  • Avoid hot showers, saunas, steam rooms, and intense workouts for the first 24 hours.
  • Apply broad-spectrum SPF 30+ diligently to any exposed treated areas.
  • Do not wax, tweeze, or use depilatory creams between sessions — shaving is fine.
  • Hair will appear to "shed" over the 1–3 weeks following treatment — this is the treated follicles releasing.
  • Avoid sun exposure to treated areas throughout your treatment series.

Treatment Protocol

Sessions

6–8 sessions for full results

Spacing

Spaced 4–8 weeks apart

The number of sessions and spacing depends on hair type, skin type, and the area being treated. Hair grows in cycles — multiple sessions are needed to catch follicles in the active growth (anagen) phase.

Results Timeline

After Each Session

You will notice a 10–20% reduction in hair growth. Treated hairs shed over 1–3 weeks following each session.

Sessions 3–4

Significant reduction in hair density becomes clearly visible. Regrowth is finer and lighter in many areas.

After Full Package

Full, smooth results are visible upon completing your 6–8 session package. Most patients achieve 70–90% permanent hair reduction.

Long-Term

Hormonal changes can occasionally trigger new hair growth. A touch-up session 1–2 times per year is usually all that is needed to maintain smooth skin.

Long-Term Maintenance

After completing your initial package, hormonal changes (pregnancy, menopause, hormonal medications) can occasionally stimulate new follicle activity. A quick touch-up session once or twice a year is typically all that is needed to maintain your results long-term.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

Anyone with unwanted hair on the face, legs, underarms, bikini area, back, or chest
Those tired of shaving, waxing, or dealing with ingrown hairs
Patients with lighter skin tones and darker hair (best contrast for IPL)
Those seeking a long-term, low-maintenance hair reduction solution
Patients with folliculitis or chronic ingrown hair issues

This treatment may not be right if you:

  • You have very light blonde, red, gray, or white hair (insufficient melanin for IPL targeting)
  • You have a recent tan, sunburn, or active self-tanner on the treatment area
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You are on photosensitizing medications — discuss with your provider
  • You have certain skin conditions in the treatment area
