What Is ResurFX?

ResurFX is a state-of-the-art non-ablative fractional laser from Lumenis — part of the Stellar M22 platform used at MerLeaux. By delivering controlled 1565 nm laser energy in thousands of microscopic treatment zones, it triggers your body's natural wound-healing response deep within the skin — stimulating fresh collagen and elastin production without removing the surface layer.

Unlike ablative lasers that vaporize the outer skin, ResurFX leaves the surface intact while remodeling the deeper dermal layers. The result is visibly smoother texture, reduced fine lines, softened scars, and improved overall tone — with significantly less downtime than traditional resurfacing.

At MerLeaux, ResurFX is used as a standalone treatment and as the resurfacing component of our TriGlow and PhotoFabulous combination protocols.

The Technology Explained

The ResurFX handpiece scans the treatment area and delivers fractional laser energy in a randomized, non-sequential pattern — ensuring uniform coverage while minimizing thermal overlap. Each pulse creates a microscopic treatment zone (MTZ) that extends from the epidermis into the dermis.

Within each MTZ, the controlled thermal injury activates fibroblasts — the cells responsible for producing collagen and elastin. As these new fibers form and mature over the following weeks and months, skin becomes progressively firmer, smoother, and more even in tone.

Because the tissue between each MTZ remains intact, healing is rapid and the risk of prolonged downtime or pigmentation changes is significantly reduced compared to fully ablative approaches.

What to Expect — Pre & Post Treatment

Before Your Treatment

  • Avoid retinol, tretinoin, and exfoliating acids for 5–7 days before treatment.
  • Avoid sun exposure, tanning beds, and self-tanners for at least 2–4 weeks prior.
  • Arrive with clean skin — no makeup, lotion, or sunscreen on the treatment area.
  • Inform your provider of all medications, especially photosensitizing drugs.
  • Topical numbing cream is applied in-office before treatment for comfort.

After Your Treatment

  • Expect redness, warmth, and a sandpaper-like texture for 3–5 days as skin renews.
  • Keep skin moisturized and avoid picking or scrubbing the treated area.
  • Apply broad-spectrum SPF 30+ diligently — sun protection is critical during healing.
  • Avoid retinol, acids, and active skincare for 5–7 days post-treatment.
  • Avoid intense heat (saunas, hot yoga, strenuous exercise) for 48–72 hours.
  • Makeup can typically be worn after 48–72 hours — your provider will advise.

Treatment Protocol

Sessions

3–5 sessions for optimal results

Spacing

Spaced 4–6 weeks apart

The number of sessions depends on your skin concerns, depth of scarring, and treatment goals. Your MerLeaux provider will design a personalized plan during your consultation.

Results Timeline

Days 1–5

Redness, warmth, and mild swelling settle. Skin may feel rough or tight as the surface renews — this is the remodeling process at work.

Weeks 1–3

Skin tone begins to even out. Early improvements in texture and clarity become visible as the epidermis fully heals.

Months 1–3

Collagen production ramps up. Fine lines soften, scars begin to blur, and skin feels noticeably firmer and more resilient.

Months 3–6

Peak results as new collagen and elastin fibers fully mature. Texture, tone, and firmness continue improving after each session in a series.

Long-Term Maintenance

After completing your initial series, most patients maintain results with one treatment per year combined with medical-grade skincare and consistent SPF use. Your MerLeaux provider will recommend a long-term plan based on your skin goals and response to treatment.
