OptiLight — Breakthrough Dry Eye Relief

If you suffer from the constant burning, grittiness, and frustration of dry eye, you know how heavily it impacts your daily life. Eye drops only offer temporary relief because they don't treat the root cause. At MerLeaux, we use the first and only FDA-approved light therapy for dry eye management to help you find lasting comfort.

OptiLight by Lumenis uses precise, controlled pulses of broad-spectrum light applied to the area just below your eyes. This light energy targets Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) — the leading cause of dry eye — by safely heating and liquifying the hardened oils blocking your glands, reducing localized inflammation, and eliminating bacteria and Demodex mites around the eyes.

The Technology Explained

Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) is the leading cause of evaporative dry eye. The meibomian glands in your eyelids produce the oil layer of your tear film — when these glands become blocked or dysfunctional, the oil hardens, tears evaporate too quickly, and dry eye symptoms result.

The Lumenis OptiLight IPL delivers precise pulses of light to the skin just below the eyes. The light energy gently heats the meibomian glands, liquifying the hardened oils so they can flow freely again. It also reduces the abnormal blood vessels (telangiectasia) around the eyelids that contribute to inflammation, and has been shown to reduce Demodex mite populations — a common contributor to MGD.

Each session is fast — approximately 15 minutes — and completely non-invasive. Most patients find the treatment comfortable, with only a mild warm sensation during the light pulses.

What to Expect — Pre & Post Treatment

Before Your Treatment

  • Discontinue retinol, skin-brightening serums, and certain antibiotics (such as doxycycline) one week prior — discuss with your provider.
  • Avoid sun exposure and self-tanners for at least 2–4 weeks before treatment.
  • Remove all eye makeup and contact lenses before your appointment.
  • Inform your provider of all eye medications, drops, and supplements you are currently using.
  • Protective eye shields will be placed over your eyes during treatment.

After Your Treatment

  • You may experience mild redness or a warm sensation around the eyes for a few hours — this is normal and resolves quickly.
  • You can return to normal activities immediately after treatment.
  • Wear sunglasses outside and apply SPF to the treated area.
  • Avoid wearing eye makeup around the eyes for 1–2 days post-treatment.
  • Continue any prescribed eye drops or medications as directed by your eye care provider.
  • Avoid direct sun exposure to the treated area for 1–2 weeks.

Treatment Protocol

Sessions

4 sessions for initial treatment

Spacing

Spaced 2–4 weeks apart

Most patients report noticeable improvement in their symptoms after their 2nd or 3rd session. The full 4-session protocol is recommended for optimal and lasting results.

Results Timeline

Sessions 1–2

Many patients begin to notice reduced dryness, burning, and grittiness. The meibomian glands begin to function more effectively as blockages clear.

Sessions 2–3

Most patients report significant improvement in dry eye symptoms. Tear break-up time improves and the need for artificial tears often decreases.

After 4 Sessions

Optimal results with improved meibomian gland function, reduced inflammation, and lasting dry eye relief. Many patients experience months of improved comfort.

Maintenance

A single maintenance session every 6–12 months helps keep meibomian glands functioning optimally and sustains long-term dry eye relief.

Long-Term Maintenance

To keep your meibomian glands functioning optimally long-term, a single maintenance session every 6–12 months is recommended. Your provider will advise on the ideal maintenance schedule based on your response to the initial treatment series.
